So what is required to qualify for a trophy in AX for 2010?

I spoke to Tom Brown about the Zone 8 Rules for awards. Online vs the printed 2010 book. He told me that the 40% rule is correct online, and it was changed after the books went to print. Zone 8 Awards are given out by the Zone 8 rep, Michael Dolphin, and they have their own awards dinner usually in the OC or LA area. There were only 6 autocrosses this year that were Zone 8. So 40% would be 2.4 in the same class. I would guess that it would round up to 3 must be completed, but I cant say for sure. As far as Zone 8 TT series that stands at 51% in the same class. There has always been much confusion about year end awards because SDR has its own set of rules. Page 127 in the Bylaws book does say 51% in both AX and TT. And I agree that should say "in the same class" This could be addressed tonight at the board meeting. Tom will more than likely be there.

Actually, there may be more than 6 Zone 8 autocrosses, that is all that I see on our SDR event schedule. I need to to go to the Z8 website to get an accurate number on that.

Looks like there will be 11 autocrosses in Zone 8. So you could get 2 trophies in Zone 8 for AX. Seems like the 51% rules makes more sense to me, but what do I know? Tom did not say why Z8 changed it from 51% to 40%.

I think the lower Zone 8 rule has to do with the fact that Zone 8 events occur over a VERY wide geographic area. Zone 8 covers half of California, half of Nevada, and all of Arizona, and includes 13 local regions (including SDR).
That makes it hard for many Zone 8 participants to actually participate in 51% of the events across that area (unless you have no other life and don't mind driving 1500 miles out and back for an Autocross - California Central Coast region is in San Luis Obispo, and Southern Arizona region is in Tucson, AZ - about 750 miles each way). :burnout:
With the 40% level, Zone 8 competitors can qualify for trophies with only a few long-distance drives. Also, since few Zone 8 drivers make it to a high percentage of the events, people have a fair chance of placing high in class with only 40% of the events.
In SDR, we don't have the same geographic costs, so requiring participation in 51% of the overall SDR events shouldn't be a hardship.

Actually, the Pinal Air Park where I ran Zone 8 events with SAR a few years ago is about 380 miles from SD, about a 5.5 hour drive. It's about 30 miles more to Tucson from there, or 410 miles total.

Don't forget that to earn a Z8 trophy, you need to participate in Z8 events. Most regions hold only one or two Z8 events per year. You need to be driving with other regions besides SDR to earn a Z8 trophy. This applies mostly to AX, as all of our TT's are Z8 events.

One thing that has not been mentioned is you have to have good results in the events as I am not aware of any trophies for 4th place down :roflmao:

Geez, Joel - you just need to compete in a class where there are other drivers! :roflmao:

From the Zone 8 Competition Rules
...2. One additional trophy per two cars entered up to five trophies per class.

In the old days, the LSS class often had 8-9 cars per event (=4th place awards) and 20+ entrants over the season.

Now that we have a car class for every individual make/model/year/color/option package, there aren't as many big classes at our events. (Except for when Team Scheussler brings their own II class to town! )
