K & N air filter, how many points?

Postby 944Greg on Mon Oct 11, 2010 11:21 am

I am looking to class the 2003 996 I recently bought (and had a blast at this past weekend's PDS with my daughter co-driving. Thank you to all the volunteers.)

The only modification on the car is a K & N airfilter and intake a previous owner installed.

I realize this bumps me out of Street Stock class to Stock class.

Is this going to cost me 4 points or what?

No, a modification of the airbox does bump you out of SS class, as it is on the list of specific exclusions, but it does not cost you any points. What you will find, though, is that the other cars in S class may have used their 8 allowable mod points to upgrade suspension and tires, making them much faster than a K&N-equipped but otherwise zero-point 996 on street tires. That doesn't mean you can't still have fun running it in the S class, you just might not be competitive w/o similar upgrades. 8 points is enough for springs, swaybars and sticky tires, which will transform the car's performance. It might be cheaper to find a stock airbox and stay in SS. :D

Thanks Tom,

I'll put a stock air box on and stay in Street Stock until I am ready to make the upgrades and take my 8 points and move into Stock class (and put the K & N back on at that time).

To me, it is generally best to leave the K&N off with a modern stock engine anyway. I think the oils used by those filters can do more damage to sensors than the very questionable performance gain. If more flow was needed, Porsche could have put a bigger filter there. Assuming the other things are stock, I doubt you will gain anything with a filter change. Cold air intake or other mods may help, but the filter shouldn't.
