OK, I did not move here until 1975, but I was living in PB on Diamond street and then moving to La Jolla and an apartment on Cuvier behind the Jack-in-the-Box on Pearl.

I remember the cheap (50 cents) Mexican food night at Tug's Tavern, on Monday nights as I recall. They also had Pong to play on the tables.
http://www.tugs-t-shirt.com/ they have some cool pictures and also some videos about Tug's

There was also a cheap spaghetti night at one of the bars in Mission beach on Wednesday night.

VG Donuts for a late night snack while studying.

As I recall, the cheap spaghetti night was at The Pennant, where you could also get a pitcher of beer for $1 (or less?).

Tom - the "Fine Arts" sounds right, and wow - how could I forget the Unicorn? Where else could you see foreign/art movies that most people in SD never heard of? 8)
The Unicorn and Earth Song (still in Del Mar since 1969) were a couple of the best places to find counter-culture books (and incense).

This reminds me of some of the other great, long-gone restaurants - the Albatross in the old church building in Del Mar (all curved wood walls and fiberglassed psychedelic tables and art - supposedly built with drug money), the Golden Rolling Belly in Del Mar (GRB - also the initials of its founders, some UCSD Psychology profs with whom I worked), and La Chaumine in Pacific Beach (ran into Mayor Hedgecock there several times - one of his favorite places, great French food).

Just for the record Maynards had the cheapest food @ 19 cents for a while then everyone jumped on the bandwagon and prices went to 25 cents for spagetti (Wed.) or rolled tacos(Fri.) or omlettes (Sun). The White Whale and Red Mountain in Birdrock area tried giving food away to attact customers but the state ABC steped in with some lame reg that said you had to make a profit on food if you had a liquor licence. Any way thanks to the poster that had the picture of Maynards it brought back some great memories now if I could just decide if my bike was outside that day or was I inside working the bar? :beerchug: :beerchug:

Here's one of the PB Drive-in. I remember seeing the movie "Harper" there with Paul Newman driving his Speedster. Did a post about that on the bolg a few ago.
