Is this the answer to the water-cooled vs air-cooled debate?

Postby Chris Moon on Tue Jan 04, 2005 11:49 am

Put a flat 6 in a 944? Have a look at the first picture in this thread -

http://forums.rennlist.com/rennforums/s ... p?t=178370

Would this finally convince the "airheads" of the superiority of the 944? Or, does this just convert the 944 to an aircooled car?

OK, I think that is officially the definition of WAY too much money and WAY too much time. Will it be front wheel drive or is he going to fabricate some sort of tranny/torque tube clutch converter as well.

I think he would have been much better off going with a midengine version and things would have been much simplier if he just had to put a 3.6 in a 944.

Could this be some Photoshop thing?

Looks pretty well thought out to be a photoshop trick, but who knows.

Note that the front suspension is a SLA set up with coilovers, no Mac Pherson struts anymore.

I don't see a drive shaft to the front wheels and the upright looks too small to accomodate one so it must be rear wheel drive.

Given the magnitude of what the guy has done in the photo, it should be within his capabilities to fabricate an adaptor plate to fit the 911 engine to the 944 driveline.

God Love them Swedes... I find the suspension much more interesting than the engine swap!!! thats steering rack looks bullet proof.

The steering rack looks like it was a different pic then over laid on the rest. It looks to me like a photo shop job. I just went out to my 944 in the garage and it looks like there is enough room between the steering rack and the firewall for a 3.6....

How can you tell it isn't waterhead envy, looking for balance, performance and affordability  :D .

He probably lifted and totalled the 911, only salvaging the engine, while his smarter, faster brother forgot to change the belts in his 944 and the answer was obvious (to him)

I figure the pre 67 911 just rusted away in Sweden, the Saab wasn't available and he grabbed the 944 to occupy his time in the Winter. [/img]

The end result will be much better-looking and quicker than a Subaru XT6 or SVX!

Reminds me of a conversation I had recently with an ex-Porsche engineer...I think his name is Manfred Brampel...who's now with Ford but worked in Stuttgart from the late 1960s through about 1978.

He did a lot of driveline development for the 924 and 928, and fabricated a bench-test rig that used a 911 engine and transaxle, but connected with the "rope drive" driveshaft from an old Pontiac Tempest. He said that thing was unbreakable!

Anyways, he applied this expertise to both the Shelby Cobra Concept and the Shelby GR-1 that was at Detroit in polished aluminum form. Both share an identical front-engine/torque tube/rear transaxle driveline fitted to an adaptation of the Ford GT's aluminum space frame.

Quite an interesting progression: Pontiac-->Porsche-->Ford!
