If anyone works for the Port or has contacts there, use them. This would be a much better solution than the military.

Gary... I have a good friend who is a Senior Engineer at the Port District (in fact one of his areas of expertise is the "community projects"). I'll float the idea past him. It may take a couple of weeks, but I'll get back to you with his answer/insights.

Ted,
I agree, if this is going to break even, or even better be profitable it would need to be a multi-use venue and a drag strip as a straight is perfect. That's what Pomona has, the race cars used to run right down the straight. I like the plan that "forgot the name" track has where there is a monthly membership that gives you full access to the track on week days, then rents out the track to organizations (SCCA, BMWCA, AFM etc.) or private events on weekends. This would mean that if you get off work at 3:00 you could hit the track until sundown (noize zoning permitting).
Cargo containers are perfect, they are cheap, bulletproof and good enough for a budding facility. drop a few of them together, add some ramps and voila: rentable garages (either for vehicle storage or track day useage). Bring a generator, a port-a-potty and a BBQ and it's party time.
Think Monticello Motor Club but as a co-op and not quite so snooty.

1) I like the idea of Larry Bevins contacting the Port District to see if we can do anything. An advantage to this area is the "noise" we generate won't affect any residential areas (I think, but not sure).

2) I am involved with a potential new track and police/fire driver training facility to be located just across the San Diego County line in Imperial County (Coyote Wells at Interstate 8). The Imperial County Board of Supervisors approved the project last December. Sierra Club has sued Imperial County over the environmental report. Sierra Club has lost the last 4 times they have done this on other projects in Imperial County. Court date is in late summer. Then an appeal is probable.

Still - it's hot in the desert in the summer and a Port District option would be great - close by and temperate climate! :D

Jennifer was asking about autocrossing in Switzerland. So I did some searches since it has been a while and found an Autocross in Interlaken. We really call them Slalom, as autocross over there is like stock car racing in the dirt.

Here is a cool on-board video of a Renault Clio Cup: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=a5MSXM2pK94

3 minute laps are pretty nice.

Martin... WOW! that was one hell of a "Slalom" That track just slighty qualifies as HP track haha. A 3 min lap would be AWESOME!!! I will admit GT3's would most likely eat the smurf for lunch on that track... :banghead: very cool video though!

Thanks for the info. Tom, yes they still do use Pinal Air Park! Looks like a great place, thanks for the article!

The DE yesterday was fun but a little disappointing at the same time. It was about a 1 mile section of Firebird but all flat. So after driving the Q with that extra Z axis and tons of turns, it was not the track experience I thought it would be. $150 for a half day of that seemed pretty steep. It was going to be a half day DE in the a.m. then AX in the p.m. when it got hotter. Got too hot for me, and I came home after the DE and I just finished signing up for the SD June AX, hope I don't freeze, LOL! :D Can't wait to drive the Q again!

Marie!
We are running at chuckwalla raceway this weekend! time trial and DE.
Contact Robert to see if there are any more student openings.
It's only 3 hours from PIR so an easy drive from Pheonix.
Get on the 10 and exit 3 hours later and the track is 5 miles from the exit.

Great time... see all your SDR buddies!

That is a great video! It was funny to watch several of the cars overcooking it on that last slalom cone. Glad to know there are local racing options. Hill climbs are dangerous with big drop offs, big tracks are 3 hours drive and longer away. The great thing is to see the open wheel cars racing along with the other cars. :D

I wish there would be an available racing area like that in SD.

Great video, looks fun and fast. These crazy guys even brought out the Formula Renaults & Formula Masters to a slalom. :-)

Yes and there are lot less cones, but the gates are numbered.
