Making my own Bushings

Postby Mmagus on Wed Jan 11, 2012 4:30 pm

Hola all!

My long search for delrin bushings to replace the ones in my rear sway bar mount finally brought me to the folks who made them to begin with and they informed me that they no longer make or carry them. Sooooo, I'm making my own. I have the Delrin rod stock ordered and I am looking to borrow an 18mm drill bit. I have an industrial size drill press at home (its a long story).

Another route would be if anyone has the ability to bore the hole for me...we could make you some as well because I have extra stock. A FOOT of the proper size ran me a whopping $10. :roflmao:

Thanks,

Mark

Mark, I have a set of large drill bits, in fraction up to 1" and a machinist's lathe. Email me if you want to come and work on it in my garage.

I don't think that stuff will drill or machine easily. I would try a 5/8" hole saw, then hone out the hole to size with sand paper rapped around a drill bit.

Re: Delrin machinability - it's excellent. If you do have access to a lathe, I would drill a hole bit undersize and finish bore to size. A pilot hole of 1/4 - 3/8 diameter can be followed by drilling to size with no problem. 18mm = .7087, a 45/64 drill bit = .7031, and might be close enough. In either case, go jump on the lathe and cut some Delrin - it's fun stuff to machine.
