NEED INPUT ON TIRES

Postby lbevins on Tue Jan 17, 2012 2:35 pm

Well... My favorite tires (Hankook Ventus C-71s) have been discontinued. So... A quick survey. Please give me your short (no long technical answers please) impressions/opinions/advice on these tires. Even just a "thumbs-up or down" or a YES, NO, NO would be fine. I will be choosing one out of this list. My thanks ahead of time. By the way - My choices are limited due to size (225-45/50-15s) :

Kumho V710s
Hoosier A6s
BF Goodrich R1s

Let me know. Appreciate it!

Larry

Larry -
TireRack.com shows that size and tread compound for the Z214 in stock, and I know that their stock tracking system is usually pretty accurate. But I wouldn't wait too long to place an order...

Larry,
Assuming these are for AX only.
V710 - Excellent as long as you don't overheat them. Then they get greasy.
A6 - The choice of rich SCCA racers. Great tire, but does not last a long time.
R1's - Longer to come up to temp. Heat cycle out well before tread is gone. More similar to Hoosier R6. Not best choice for AX.

Toyo RA1's available in your size. Not quite as much stick as above tires, but very predictable and they last a very long time.

My $.02 only!

Russell and Chuck... Perfect. Exactly the type of info I was looking for. After this post I'm on the phone with Tire Rack.

RA1s are a great long-term investment, but they really don't stick any better than RE-11s or RS3s, they just slide more predictibly.

If you can afford $1000 every 8-10 events, A6s will blow your mind. They're so far ahead of any other DOT tires it's absurd. They do heat-cycle out before they cord, but even cycled they still provide enough grip and predictibility for practice runs.

The best middle ground is probably the NT01. They grip well, they won't cycle out, they are very progressive, and they are cheaper than R888s or even RA1s. Available in 225/45R15.

Thanks, all. Great input... I just ordered a set of the Hankooks from Tire Rack. Now... next year, might be another story. Ha! Thanks again.
