Tech Session idea: racing app, data acquisition; help needed

Postby MR LIPP on Wed Apr 25, 2012 10:18 am

We would like to do a tech session featuring smart phone apps, high end data acquisition and video. I am sure we have some experts out there who can explain their favorite smart phone app, or data acquisition system to the rest of us. We would also need a conference room with enough room for our group. There is no one local company that can host this type of tech session and it looks like we have to do it on our own. We are hoping to set this up some time in the fall.

Martin, the Chase Cam guys in Poway held a session several years ago. Were you involved with that one? It was good. Did they politely decline this time around?

The Aimsport guys had said they're willing to give a training session on their DA/video systems, given there is a place and enough participants. I'm sure they're interested in demonstrating their new products as well. May be worth giving them a call.

Martin:

One thing to consider; recent experiences at TT's have halted the use of suction-cup phone holding devices (typically mounted inside windshields). So, included in the app/devices/systems you might want to include safe, approved mounting systems for cameras, smart-phones phones, and other recording devices. Don't want to see iPhones on turn 2 any more.

Dan- this is news to me, was there a rules change or something? I just got an AIM Solo device and have been using it at the last few TT events with a window suction cup holder.

Weren't you in the driver's meeting on Friday morning when this was discussed? I believe that the rule is that all devices not bolted in (and maybe bolted in as well? Some heavy cameras may not be sufficently secured wuth a 1/4-20 tripod screw) must be tethered. See Paul Youngs video where he leaves a camera on the playground...

I would think that a Go-Pro on a roll bar mount should be OK, but clarification would be nice.

For those needing a more secure mount for a camera or data/laptimer, these RAM mounting systems have really good solutions. Much more secure than the suction cup method.

Don
I set up the ChaseCam tech session three years ago and have tried to set up another one...no response. I don't think things are going well there. GoPro is too much competition for them.

Fred
Please send me the contact info for AIMS rep. That would be interesting.

Dan
I have my Hot Lap timer on suction mount and it stays put.

But maybe I am wrong here, couldn't you just turn on the app on your iphone and then put it in the console?
(Mark Rondeau is the Harrys lap timer expert and could clarify for us.)

Or you can adjust the heads up display and read off speed and g-force on the windscreen...oh wait that's only on the Z06 :roflmao: :roflmao: :roflmao:

A lot of Time Trial guys use RacePak G2X or IQ3.

RacePak is just up the road in O.C.:

The software is kind of arcane, but there's probably several guys in the club who know how to wade through it...

+2...do we have anyone who considers themselves a "superuser" on the G2X software? It would GREAT to have a session with someone who could help simplify it's features and functions.

I consider myself fairly proficient with the RacePak S/W, but not quite expert.
