Adding my personal invitation too. I can't count the times that we've heard people who have spent $1,500. to $3,000. dollars at "famous" driving schools say that they learned more, got more seat time, got better one-on-one instruction, and had more fun at our little 2 1/2 day school. I can personally guarantee you that you'll walk away knowing how to drive your car better/safer. And, that you'll meet some great new people. And, that you'll leave on Sunday afternoon with a big smile on your face.

Sign up early. Space is limited. See you there.

I signed up today, looking forward to it.

Its my first driving training event so I wondered how I should prepare the car for the Qualcom track.

Top up the oil, check the coolant level, tire pressures are equal front pair and rear pair...anything else, should I use making tape on the body around the wheel wells to protect from debris?

Is the event insurance worth while, can a Boxster overturn at such an event? (With a 2000 deductible and no liability insurance it does not seem very useful unless another car hits you, you roll or hit a wall)

My rear tires have between 1/16 - 2/16" tread above the wear bars.

Should I replace them before the event with Hankook v12's or after?

Also, do I need a helmet or other protective gear for this event?
I have a couple Motorcycle Helmets DOT2 I think, if those might suffice?

Any other tips to get the most from the course?

I plan to use this as my intro to performance driving and a lead in to Autocross and other events.

You will probably get an email from the current Chief Driving Instructor before the event, but as past CDI, I can give you my opinions:

First, welcome, you should have a LOT of fun and learn a lot. Arrive on time, well rested and ready to learn - don't try to teach us how good you are - to get the most out of the class.

Top off the oil and bring extra, full tank of gas, check your brake pads and put in fresh brake fluid. If your car is absolutely perfect, you can use tape, the car will get very dirty, but should not get many more chips than normal driving. Most people don't bother with the tape and the cars are fine.

In the nearly 20 years I have been helping with these schools, I can't recall a significant incident at a school. You are probably safer during the school than driving to the events. As this is definitely a school, and NOT racing, your normal insurance may even cover you. Check with them and make your own decision, just because nothing has happened before, does not mean it is impossible.

You generally do not want to replace tires before the school as they will get significant wear and teach you more when nearly worn, BUT if they have cord showing or they fall apart, you will have to replace them or stop driving. Look very closely, and if they are truly above the wear bars clear across the tire, you should be fine. Check the inside of the rear tires, Porsches like to secretly wear out that part.

You can not use a helmet unless it is Snell certified from 2005 or 2010 (DOT certification is not sufficient). They will be provided, so you don't need one unless you don't want to share the clubs helmets.

These are just my opinions, hope they help.

I'll take some pictures/measurements and post them since I don't know what chord looks like.

Thanks for the tips

A couple of comments...
1. Tires - If your fronts are old and worn and the rears are brand new, it will make your car a bit harder to spin and "pitch and catch". A C4 with bald front tires and new rears is nearly impossible to pitch and catch (not completely, but nearly). We have had a few show up like that, and you won't get as much out of those exercises as you would with a more balanced set of tires. Actually, new fronts and worn (but not corded!) rears will get you the most experience, if you have an option.
2. Do NOT underinflate your tires. Ensure they are at least at the factory recommended pressures - maybe even 1-2 lbs higher - at least until you know how your car and tires handle. The only "incident" I recall at the school that resulted in any body damage (and it was minor) was an underinflated tire that lost the bead when the car was sliding sideways and the tire struck a rather large "seam" in the parking lot pavement. If your tire is at least at the factory recommended pressure, it should not be possible to lose the bead. FYI - if your tire loses the bead seal, it will deflate instantly, which can cause other parts of your car to contact pavement.
3. Corded tires will not be allowed - if you can see "cord" (what looks like cotton threads in the tire, or even shiny bits of steel belts), the tire is unsafe and must be replaced ASAP. You will wear through the belts/cords VERY quickly, and just like losing the bead, when the cords/belts give way, you may find your car suddenly dragging body metal along the ground ($$$). As noted, check the insides of the rear tires - these tend to cord faster than other areas, and they aren't as obvious.

Ray,

Start here: http://pcasdr.net/pcasdr/handouts/DrivingSchoolHandbook.pdf

This will give you a head start on the school and all of the information you'll need to know before you go. Pay attention to pages 4 and 5, chapter 3. This tells you what you and your car need to be prepared for and how. Make an appointment now at your Porsche shop to have the car inspected no later than one week prior to the start of the school. If possible, make it two weeks prior (just in case some issue needs to be addressed). This will give you peace of mind and may keep your Porsche from being injured or damaged due to a preventable mechanical malfunction. If you don't have a Porsche specific shop that maintains your vehicle, I recommend using one of our Windblown Witness advertisers.

See you at the PDS. :D

The tires need to be replaced, no question. I guess I wore them some since I got the car in May this year.

That guide is great. I'll make sure the car is preped.

Only confusing part is the Helmet. I'd like to buy one for the event and beyond.
An SA2010 is the current standard as far as I can tell, but now I wonder about open face or full face for autocross driving?

It did not specify in the rules that I could tell. Any pros/cons for open of full face helmets?

You can use an open face helmet for AX. All of our rental/loaner helmets are open faced.

Basically open face helmets are better for AX because they are cooler, lighter and make it easier to talk to your passenger/instructor.

Full face helmets are safer, protect your eyes from dirt and are required for wheel to wheel racing.

I would start with open face, and if you move up to time trials and club racing, you will have enough knowledge to get the helmet you will like best at that time.
