Sunday Drive from San Diego?

Postby emptyo on Sun Apr 14, 2013 12:36 am

Hi all,

Since I'm new here, I haven't ever done a twisty drive in my car. Can anyone recommend a good route to take where I could drive for an hour or so?

I'm in North Park San Diego.

Thanks!

I like old highway 94 (East of HWY 125) out about 30 miles then north on the road that turns in to Hwy S2 around lake Cuyamaca and back South on S1. will take ~3 hours and make sure you have your navigator GPS and or good maps and full tank.
Welcome and have fun!

One of my favorite areas is Wynola Road between 78/Julian Road on the West and 78/Banner Grade on the East, then Banner South and West back to Julian. This road is *usually* not too crowded - particularly Wynola Road.

Note - Palomar Mountain used to be fun, but there are too many suicidal motorcyclists on weekends. See another posting where a member had his Carrera Cab trashed by an oncoming motorcyclist in the wrong lane.

The run up or down hill from Ramona to the Wild Animal Park on 78 can be fun, but if you get stuck behind a slow driver who won't let you by, it can be frustrating. At least it is a very scenic drive.

Highland Valley road from 67 in Ramona down to Pomerado by I-15 at Lake Hodges can be fun.

For a longer run (3 - 4 hours) try:
Interstate 8 to either Hwy 79 or Sunrise highway
79 or Sunrise Highway north to Julian
Turn right down Banner Grade (Hwy 78)
Turn right on S2 to Ocotillo (real fun stretch and usually pretty quiet)
I-8 back to San Diego, or turn off I-8 South on Hwy 79 (Japatul Valley Rd and then left on Lyons Valley Rd) back down to 94.
