Classification for Time Trial

Postby GregJAdelman on Wed Feb 02, 2005 12:17 pm

I am heading to the Festival in March and do not know how I should class my car for time trials. It is a 1986 930 with 285 Tires. Everything else is stock. I pick up 2 points for tire size and that is it. From what I can figure out It would be an "NS"??? Is that possible? I will run in the same class as a GT3??? That doesn't seem right.

Any info would be appreciated.

I think you fall into M class (78-89 930), and if you have tires with treadwear >200 you would run MSS with 2 points for wide tires (max for SS)
If you run tires with <200 then you would run MS.
You don't get the GT3 but the 993 and Boxster S

Greg P., the only cars in M anymore are the 986S and 987. Everyone else has been moved up to N.

I was all set to try my hand against the likes of Robert B., Joe H., and Bill H. to find out they are in NP now not MP :banghead:

Classifications

Yes, it lookslike you are correct, and you have fixed the link to the old classification
Still, he will be in N, but witht the same competition of early turbos and the 993s, not the GT3 and later twin turbos.

Thank you for the info. So I guess I am in the "N' class. If I am running 285 tires (perelli pzero rosso) I believe I add 2 points only. Does that make me an "NS" or is it simply "N"?

Grossly simplified reply follows - see the classification forms on the main web site at http://www.pcasdr.org/forms/AXRegForm.pdf for more information. Full details are in the Zone 8 region competition rules, but the registration sheet should suffice for now.

There isn't really an "N" class.

Everyone starts their car in xSS (where "x" is the overall car class, "N" in your case) - "SS" stands for "Street Stock" (or "Showroom Stock"). If your car hasn't been modified at all since it was delivered through a dealer, you start there, with 0 points.

If you modify the car (add 3 or more points for modifications, including special tires), you then move up to "xS" ("Street").

If you further modify (total of 7 or more points), you move to "xP" ("Prepared") class. When you hit 21 or more points, you go to "xI" ("Improved"), and at 41 or more points, you become a "Modified" vehicle (and usually switch classes to either "KM" or "AM"). At 54+ points, you are considered a full "R" ("Race") vehicle and go into the "AR" class.

In your case, a stock 930 would start as NSS. Adding 285 tires adds 2 points, which still allows you to run in NSS. If the tires are street tires of "R" or "C" compound and/or have a tread wear rating of 200 or less, then you would bump into the "NS" class (since you would then have 3-6 points, depending on the wear rating). If you ran race tires (e.g. Hoosier slicks), you immediately get kicked into the I or M classes (and add 6 points for tires).

If you weren't the original purchaser of the car, are you sure there were no aftermarket modifications by previous owners (suspension upgrades, etc.)? If there were, you may have additional points assessed and wind up in NS or NP. The guys at Tech Inspection at the February 12th AX can probably help identify any additional modifications.

Perfect. Thank you very much for the explanation. I have had the car overhauled before and have all the papers for the car. The car is stock. It was lowered a bit and the tires are 285 but other than that it is stock.

I'm not really into the timing, just want to be compliant. Just heading there to run the track and learn the line.

Hopefully I'll see you there. I'm in a black 930 slantnose with Fikse wheels. Number should be 1771.

Thanks again for everyones input.

Greg,

Have you checked out the safety equipment required for running at Fontana? Hopefully this is a silly question, but I'd hate to see anyone fail the tech inspection for lack of a proper 5-pt harness and fire extinguisher. Also, there are requirements on driving experience. If you have any doubts, please consult the time-trial webpage and the Zone 8 competition rules. Carl

Thank you for the input. I have all the proper equipment. I checked everything out and should be fine. I have run a few DE events and autocrosses with SDR plus a few days at Laguna Seca with Trackquest. I have frequented Watkins Glen and Lime Rock with Connecticut Valley Region.

Thanks again. We'll see you there.
