I run in both clubs too and the BMW DE events are definitely oriented towards limited to no experience students with "lots" of instructor control compaired to PCA events and full on classroom sessions between run groups for everybody from fastest run group on down. There low emphasis on "going fast" but a high emphasis on "education". It is great to come off your session and go to the classroom with everybody from your run group and all the instructors to talk over what went on and what to do better.

Nothing is final yet, but I think this is how the new PCA 'DE' program will be as well. A DE will no longer be defined purely as a TT without timing. It is going to be a fun, educational stepping stone as was originally intended. Sign up for SOW and help the program survive as best case it will only be offered a few times a year. Do not wait and see how it developes as it may not  No matter what, SOW is one of the best tracks to come get a taste and ease into continuous lapping.

So, my initial questions has been answered, no instructor will have to get into a GT3 with a driver that has zero track time and run one of our normal DE/TT sessions at full speed

Mike, sign up for a DE single day...no transponder timing is provided, so a transponder rental isn't needed.

Sounds like there's some demand for an advanced DE group. Signing up would confirm it.

Suggestion for consumers of track time: when shopping for events be sure to consider the amount of experience those running the event have and their safety record, how much scheduled time you'll get for the price, how the event is run (is the track kept hot as run groups change over, are run groups carefully designed to keep massive speed differentials apart, etc.), the tech requirements (no tech vs. self tech vs. event tech, as looser tech increases the probability for lost track time and unsafe conditions), the helpfulness and camaraderie of the group, etc. No one wants to overpay for anything, but it definitely pays to consider the above in addition to the quoted price. $10, 20 or $30 is always nice to save despite being small amounts for this sport, but just comparing event registration prices alone can be deceiving.

If you add yet another run group to a TT day filled with novice DE drivers/instructors, TT run groups of varying speed and skill, and then an advanced DE group, won't that decrease track time for everybody. Why not just run the advanced DE with an appropriate TT class. The transponder charge should be minimal anyway, $10, maybe $5.

That's an excellent suggestion, transponder price not withstanding. Let's see who signs up for what and we'll figure it out.

Someone that knows??? is this right?

If I were to enter SOW without a transponder…
I run 1:25 at SOW CW (2008 PCA SOW CW TTOD/instructor).

Is there any doubt my car will be placed with other instructors driving the fastest cars?
Without renting or installing a transponder?
You only need a transponder for timed laps Sunday afternoon, correct?

Mike, sign up for the DE...no transponder timing is provided, so a transponder rental isn't needed. Once we determine demand you'll find out what groups are available and you can change your mind if you'd like. No doubt you're a great driver that belongs in the fastest available group.

Sooner or later we ALL have this student :banghead:
It's bad enough at an AX where the speeds are held in check by the course size, to reign in such a student with a fast sweeper in front of the windshield will take a strong authoritarian approach. It's not the most fun day for the instructor when the student is making him uneasy and needs constant restraining.

Hi Dave, I won't be instructing at this event.
My concern is that b/c I have no transponder and a DE request my car and I may be placed in the DE school run group.
In that case I would ask for a refund for my own safety. :surr:

heehee, am I the only guy that got a/j before a transponder? :roflmao:
Yes the 911 has a hard wired transponder.
In my case I'm shopping for a safe single day event to run a Z06 on 710s.

Lucky Dave, good meeting you and sharing the track too.
Missed ya at Chuckwalla, it was awesome.
If I make it to SOW in the Z06 you might have a better shot at me. :beerchug:

Quit Imageing and come out and drive!

The newbies will be restrained and trained.
Those of us who are qualified to and want to drive fast, will. Those who aren't qualified will go through DRIVER EDUCATION.
Those of us who want to be timed, will. Those who don't, won't. The details are being worked out. All of this will be done with maximum safety in mind.
